Scotland Yard App Reviews

Cannot read anything

It took me a while to figure out why the tutorial wasnt doing anything. Then I figured out the text is just unreadable. Essentially cannot complete the tutorial and hence cannot play the game. Useless.

Good first attempt to bring Scotland Yard back to life!

Love this game as a board game, which I still play today! Has the potential of 5 stars, but I would like to have the option to have the original board game look n feel, as well as this modernised version, as well as some of the improvements recommended by other reviewers. So gladly give 5 stars, when these two conditions are met!

Fantastic!

Just the way I remembered the game from growing up in Germany. I do not agree with the negative feedback regarding the tutorial. Love the animation and the quality of the graphics. Better than the original board game! Thank you Ravensburger - keep more games coming!

Alright

There are some glitches with the tutorial so at first I couldnt read it. That somehow fixed itself. This is definitely a strategy game.

Figured out unreadable text problem

Just got the game and I, too, had the unreadable text problem on iOS7 and fixed it by going to Settings->Accessibility and setting Increase Contrast to On (and then reboot the iPad). That now puts the dark text against a white box background, as it was originally designed. Now I need to figure out whats the most effective way to play me against the AI and have a semblance of a challenging game.

Great game that could be better...

First of all, Scotland Yard is a fun game with lots of potential. Its easy to learn so even children will have no problem picking it up. A wonderful family game. It has in-game voice chat that really needs work if you are playing others online. However, you can only hear 1 or 2 players and it is very sporadic. SUGGESTION: allow voice chat for the detectives but dont allow Mr. X to hear. This gives detectives the chance to discuss strategies. SUGGESTION: It would be wonderful if there was a replay feature so everyone could see how close they were to nailing Mr. X! That would make for some great laughs. Until that happens, a work around we use is to take a screen shot and send it via Chat. Other than buggy in-game voice chat, the only other problem weve seen is having a player randomly disconnect. Frustrating but doesnt happen that often. Highly recommend as the developer has a good rep for fixing bugs and adding features.

LOTS OF FUN ... When it works.

I got this game as a gift from my out-of-state family so that four of us could play together long distance. As such, we utilize the chat function frequently. Or do we? Turns out only two of us at a time can talk to each other. When one person loses the chat connection, another magically gains it. All in all, not a huge deal, but it would be nice if it had some consistency -- ideally we could all talk at once. Seems pretty obvious, but the function just doesnt seem to exist. The big problem is that one or more of us is constantly getting booted out of the game. This wasnt always an issue, but for the past several hours its been impossible to finish a round. We finally just gave up. Its always at least one person who loses connection or the game freezes/crashes. We all have optimal internet connections (no issues with quality apps) and our software is all up to date. Fix it, and well come back. When it works, its a blast! It just never works.

Believe the reviews about the tutorial

It might be worth $5 just to see how poorly a major game company can make a tutorial. Even having read earlier reviews complaining about the unreadable text, I didnt even see the writing at first. I never dreamed someone would actually sell a program, for money, that used black text on the background of the black-ish board. (Its sorta like when youre doing a PowerPoint and youre playing with the colors and you forget to change the background. And then you look at it and think, "oops," and you fix it. Except Ravensburger didnt look at it.) Once I did see the inane introductory text (something sarcastic about "changing sides" and working for Scotland Yard -- it appears I prompted that by an inadvertent screen tap, but I havent been able to repeat it), I still couldnt detect any way to advance. If youve never played this game before, this is not the place to start. Fortunately, I have, and the game play itself is fine. I havent played enough to rate the AI, and havent tried online play. But the tutorial. Oh my. Out of the more than two dozen boardgame ports and numerous other games Ive downloaded, this is the worst. Hands down.

Upset buyer

I am upset I payed for this game! I cant figure out how to play, the tutorial text is unreadable. By tilting and squinting I think I made out what the first page says, but cant figure out how to carry out the instructions anyway. Can I get my money back? This is severely in need of an update with at least the tutorial, I cant speak for the rest cuz I cant even get there!

Good game, but poor interface

This is a good interpretation of one of my favorite board games, but some of the text is near-unreadable. The black text against the dark background makes it almost impossible to read. Fix this, and youll get the fifth star.

Expect the expected

Update 2: I saw some recent comments about the tutorial being bad. Although at first it worked for me under the general section, i decided to see why people might be having issues. So I tried the detective tutorial and sure enough there was a problem. The letters were black but was no longer in a white window. I tried Mr X section and that too was bad. Then I went back to general tutorial and it was also bad. So it is glitchy because at first it worked but now you cant read it. The AI was really bad my last game so Im going back to 4 stars for these issues ------------------- Update: I played a few more rounds. The AI actually seems to be decent now. I beat it as Mr. X however it was very tense. The AI players were literaly only one space away several times. The second time I actually got caught! I think I was assuming the AI was that bad and I was kiling it but suddenly I got caught! That alone is priceless. Yes, sometimes the AI moves are questionable when I have to reveal my spot but for the most part they move to capture me. Bumping my stars from 4 to 5 because the last few games have been tense which I never thought would ever happen! ------------------------------------- As a kid playing this in the 80s this ios app is basically a recreation of the exact gameplay of the boardgame. As reviews have mentioned the AI is something to be desired- I only played it once so far with my fellow AI players set to hard. All worked together and and we captured Mr. X by round 11 but one AI player was off in Neverland. Am I blown away by it? No. Is the same gameboard feel to it? No. Does it play how you would expect it to play on an ipad? Yes. Graphics are nice. After one game, like I said, Im happy with the purchase of $.99. I wouldnt probably have paid more but I would recommend it for the sale price. You cant go wrong with Mr. X! Oh and people have complained about the tutorial. I played both on my iphone 4s and ipad 3 and the tutorials were flawless. No problems reading it. People said its black words on a blue background. I had black words on a white background for both.

Good game, poor app

This may be a fun board game, but the app is poorly implemented. I had to go online to read the rules because both the rules in-game and the tutorial were unreadable. They were missing some sort of backdrop, and the font was unreadable on the background. Furthermore, I finished just one game (won) and it gave me the "win 10 games" achievement. So, yeah, fun game, but poor app. Hope they fix the bugs soon.

Good game

I cant say anything about the keyboard or chat. I just use the game to play the AI. Its a good, fun game. The only problem I have, & its very isolated, is sometimes the game doesnt recognize when I tap on the board. In those circumstances, I have to restart the app.

Cool and smart but illegible

Tiny black font on a dark blue background- I cant read anything in this app, and Im young with good vision. I love what you guys did with San Juan, but the interface on this is subpar and will negatively impact my willingness to buy your future products. Please update.

Great app!

Love the board game and now the app. iOS version very easy to maneuver. Although playing on an iPhone or iPod is a little tricky cuz of screen size but overall great app.

Tutorial Completely Broken

Right from the start this version is broken. The tutorial is completely illegible and unplayable as a result.

Encountered problem with tutorial text

I have an iPhone 5s. Cant read the tutorial text, and Im not familiar with the board game so app is useless for me. Anyone know how to request a refund on an app?

Good fun

Easy to learn, fun to play

All positives

I played the game as a kid, so I didnt need to try to read the tutorial. So far the game is excellent, and if you liked the board game, you will like the electronic version.

Scotland Yard

Great game! Close enough to the board game for the purist, with the edgy feel for the techie. Fun and challenging.
